Salt Collection: What is water casting?

Introducing Salt: A Unique Connection Between Silver and the Sea

The jewellery collection ‘Salt’ reflects the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged Cornish coastline. Every piece in the collection begins with a simple yet powerful process – melting recycled silver and casting it into saltwater. This casting method ensures that each ring, necklace, cuff bangle, and pair of earrings is completely unique, with no two pieces ever looking the same.

What makes this collection so distinct is not only its design but the method of creation. The silver undergoes a transformative journey, cast into the salty depths of Atlantic waters. Depending on many factors the resulting shapes can vary dramatically. Sometimes the castings resemble sea beans, those mysterious, smooth seeds that drift across oceans, or they might look like a splash of water frozen in time, fragments of seaweed swaying with the tide, or even the rough textures of barnacles and rocks that line the Cornish coast.

This casting process takes place in my studio at home in Cornwall, where I draw inspiration from the powerful natural elements surrounding me. The Cornish coastline, with its dramatic cliffs, ever-changing tides, and constant Atlantic winds, plays a huge role in shaping the Salt collection. Every casting reflects the unrepeatable moment it was made, just as the Cornish sea and sky are never the same twice.

The Art of Water Casting

Water casting is an ancient technique, but in the Salt collection, it’s reimagined with a modern, oceanic twist. I collect saltwater from the Atlantic, often during walks along the Cornish shore. The temperature of the water and the way I handle it afterward all affect the final outcome of the silver castings. The silver, too, must be carefully heated to the right temperature, and even small differences in heat can change the way it reacts when it hits the water.  The hotter the silver, the more dynamic and fluid the shapes; a higher pour creates dramatic, elongated splashes, while casting closer to the surface results in more compact and intricate designs.  Each piece of jewellery is the result of these intricate factors coming together.

This process is intensely hands-on, with no room for shortcuts or mass production. Every single piece is crafted by hand, making each item of the Salt collection an individual expression of nature’s unpredictability.

Recycled Silver and Sustainability

One of the core values behind the Salt collection is sustainability. I use only recycled silver, ensuring that each piece carries both a story of renewal and a commitment to reducing environmental impact. Silver, a precious metal, has a long life cycle, and by reusing it, I contribute to a process that limits the need for new mining, helping to protect the natural environments I draw inspiration from.

This focus on sustainability extends beyond the material itself. The saltwater casting technique connects the jewellery to the sea in a very tangible way, and it’s important to me that this connection honours the ocean rather than harming it. By using recycled materials and a handcrafting process that leaves a minimal environmental footprint, Salt is a collection that speaks to the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving it.

Cornwall: The Soul of Salt

Living and working in Cornwall, I am constantly inspired by the natural landscape that surrounds me. The rugged coastline, the untamed ocean, and the ever-changing skies are all part of what makes this region so special. The Salt collection is deeply rooted in this environment, with each piece embodying the raw beauty of the Cornish coast.

Salt

Salt is more than just a jewellery collection—it’s a tribute to the sea, to Cornwall, and to the unpredictable beauty of nature. Each piece is handcrafted from recycled silver, shaped by the saltwater of the Atlantic, and influenced by the ever-changing elements of the Cornish coast.

Every item in the Salt collection carries a story of sustainability, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the sea. Whether you’re drawn to the organic forms of seaweed, the smooth curves of sea beans, or the rough textures of coastal rocks, each piece is a reflection of the beauty and power of the ocean.

Through Salt, I aim to share this connection with you – one that celebrates the raw, untamed beauty of the sea and the coastline that shapes it.
